In Boston and the Boston Legend, Lucius Beebe describes him as a 'rangy youth' who was a 'constant companion of Elliot Paul, the Hill's most authentic Bohemian.' 'Townsend,' Beebe wrote, 'was perhaps, the only strictly solvent memeber of the early Bohemians of '22 and '23.'
